I’ve always loved the Tampa/St. Pete area, and was racing down the road to get there last week for a social media conference (Social Fresh East). The event was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Tampa Airport – Westshore hotel and for convenience’s sake, I stayed there as well. There weren’t any surprises here, good or bad, it was a standard DoubleTree property complete with great cookies upon check-in. I wasn’t blown away or turned off by the rooms, from what it looked like it, it is an older property that has received the obligatory upgrades. The major downside of my room, was that it was facing the highway, so the buzz of the traffic was constant.
Outside of the rooms, there were two gems on the property that I applaud. The first being, a cozy out door patio area near the conference room, where I snuck away to eat my lunch. With it’s tropical plants, and limited seating space, it gave a great reprieve from being in the classroom style, cold conference room. However, beware of smokers…they found the hideout as well, and took advantage of it. Also, the omelette chef in the restaurant was full of morning cheer, which translated into great customer service. He offered up a mean omelette, as well as stellar customer service, which goes a long way during a busy second-day conference morning when you’re fighting for food and a place to eat it comfortably before the start of a session.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Tampa Airport is for you if:
You want to shop. I ventured out my first night to grab a bite to eat, and found that the hotel was minutes away from great shopping at the International Plaza Mall and Westshore Plaza Mall.
You’re here for a conference. If your conference is being held at the hotel, might as well as stay, right? Again, it’s not the newest property, as evident by the older furniture in the Hilton Honors Happy Hour floor, but the hotel is fine for a night or two stay if you have to be there anyway.
