I went to Orlando this past weekend for an impromptu visit to Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival (which is incredible by the way). After six hours of tasting wine and other adult beverages, my friend and I remembered we still didn’t have a place to lay our head for the night. We seriously considered sleeping in the mini van if we couldn’t find a room in the vicinity. Well, the hotel gods were with us and we were able to make a reservation at the Sheraton Safari. The hotel was six miles away from Epcot (even though we managed to drive 45 minutes out the way…don’t ask).
The cool thing about the hotel is that it is close to the theme parks and situated right off of I-4, Orlando’s main highway system. There are several restaurants in the area which I’m sure is a plus for families and weary tourists after long days of parks and shopping. The hotel lives up to its theme name with carrying out the safari feel in the lobby and decor in the room (read zebra bed covers). We drug ourselves to our sixth floor room, which wasn’t so bad at midnight and considering there is only one elevator in our building. Conversely, it was a challenge the next morning as we waited more than 10 minutes for the elevator before deciding to walk down six flights (read if you have a lot of luggage plan to wait for the elevator).
The hotel is going under major construction so if you are looking for a room with a view you won’t find one for a few months, however the pool is still open and from the looks of it pretty soon that pool will be expanding in a pretty major way. If you’re a family planning for next summer’s vacation give the Sheraton Safari a ring to see if construction will be done during your visit.
Is It For You? This hotel is for you if:
- You are a small family. Room space is average in a double bed room.
- You are folks who want to get to the Disney properties quickly. It felt like the theme parks were thisclose to the exit. Okay, I’m exaggerating but it’s not a long drive at all.
